If you are not an experienced gardener, container gardening really is the easiest way to get started. you can literally start with one pot. In the spring, you could even just go and buy bedding plants that are already in flower to start your garden.
Terracotta pots look good in most situations and are also good for the plants. They offer some protection from the extremes of temperature and are porous making it hard to over water.
Add some broken pot shards or gravel to the bottom of your pot to aid drainage and top up with a general compost, easily obtainable from garden centres. Never use garden soil as it may contain weeds, disease and harmful insects.
Thoroughly water your plants before planting in your pot. Gently firm down the compost to about an inch below the top of the pot to allow for watering and your instant garden is ready. You just need to water regularly through the summer. The fertilizer in the compost will last for 4 to 6 weeks. You can add slow release granules when you plant or start to use a liquid fertiliser weekly.
As soon as the danger of frost has past, your container can go outside. You can enjoy an abundant display of blooms through the summer.
